Liquid Pitch

Liquid Pitch - official name: Coal Tar Pitch (Molten) - is one of the products from the distillation process of coal tar.

Coal tar is a by-product when producing coke from coal. The coke is then used in the steelmaking process.

The location of distillation plants for coal tar is therefore naturally in proximity to the coking batteries, normally located in steelmaking regions.

Currently the main exporting countries of Liquid Pitch are China, Korea and Japan in the Far East and EU and until recently Ukraine.

The relative importance of China as exporter have increased dramatically over the past decade.

Liquid Pitch is transported by specialised ships capable of heating and maintaining temperatures of above 200 degree Celcius.

The main consumer of Liquid Pitch are aluminium smelters. They are using Liquid Pitch as binding agent to form pre-baked anodes used in the electrolytic process to produce metallic aluminium.

Main importer of Liquid Pitch is the Middle East, but also Canada, Southern Africa and Australia are dependant on imports.
